Welcome to USA Dance North-Central New Mexico
Our chapter started like many, "in the beginning", which for us was October 2005 when the original steering committee for the chapter was formed by pioneer members: Ben Porter, Shawna Hollen, Ed Jonas-Morrison, Sally Semm, Caren Waters, Anna Watkins (Chapter Coordinator). Our first membership list from USA Dance National in September 2005 shows only 8 names. We were officially certified as USA Dance Chapter 5047 on February 28, 2006, our official birthday.
We have grown from the original 8 members and one dance per month to over 145 members. We have two dances on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month (sometimes 5th Sundays) that average about 70 dancers. Our monthly dances include a 40 minute group lesson on the 1st Sunday and a usually a demonstration by local professionals, amateurs or dance groups on the 3rd Sunday. Our dances are held at the Albuquerque Square Dance Club, an excellent facility for ballroom dancing with a large wooden dance floor inside and plenty of parking outside. Click here for directions.
Our Dance Performance (aka Formation) Team began in January 2008, and many of the original members are still dancing with the group. Our dedicated volunteer dancers and teachers serve as Ambassadors for USA Dance and the Chapter. The team shares the joy of ballroom dancing through dance performances at a variety of venues such as senior citizen centers, nursing homes, assisted living centers, civic organizations, and community events. The emphasis of the team is community outreach and service rather than competitive performance.
Individuals interested in becoming team members should have some dance experience, especially in the basic ballroom dances. Dancers interested in finding out more about the team or who would like to join us, or if you're interested in having the Formation Team perform for an organization, contact the team via e-mail at email@example.com.
